Stereotypes

Our theme and subject for the first half of Define Normal is a very sensitve subject. Stereotyping, bullying, etc has directly effected us all. When discussing the matter please be the mature young adults that this subjects requires of you. Be precise with your word choice, and reread comments before you post them. All school rules apply, but just as importantly, the social skills of our world apply.

Stereotypes-we all have heard them and many of us have used them as our simple way of filling in the blanks for what we do not know or are not willing to learn. As we learned in class, the problem occurs when stereotypes (theory/idea) grow into something much bigger like an prejudice (attitude). At many schools, including ours, stereotypes play a major role in "bullying"; a problem many us have faced in our middle school careers.
Not including age or sex, many of us have characteristics that are prone to stereotypes. Think about this school. Where and when do stereotypes come up? Without using specific names, what are some of the groups who take a bad wrap? Feel free to discuss the origin (where do they begin) and happenings of stereotyping at our school. On a larger scale, who in the world is to blame for stereotypes?
The bigger picture is, how do we stop it! Take some time to evaluate the strategies the school has introduced to stop stereotyping "Mix it Up Day," "No Name Calling Week," school assemblies. Are these effective? What are some suggestions you would make to improve the school's problem?
Please have an open, but POSITIVE discussion on stereotyping in your life. Think of it as a journal entry with a chance to read, respond, and connect with others.

  1. I think that there's nothing the school can really do to stop people from stereotyping or labeling other people. It's something everyone does. When you see someone who dresses or acts different than you, you automatically stereotype.

  2. stereotyping is probably the first step of bullying because you judge others by who they hang out with or talk to. other ways people steretype others is how they dress. stereotyping is wrong and it shouldnt be done because you dont know the person. so why do you have any reason to judge them?

  3. Sterotyping plays a role in everyones lives. Teachers at our scool try to stop it, but it will never work. Everyone sterotypes weither they know it or not. It's apart of our dailys lives. There is no way to stop sterotyping.

  4. as we all know, sterotyping is a major problem in our school. whether we like it or not, every where we go there is some form of sterotyping. noone is to blame besides us, the people of the world. it was noone's specific fault. and there will be no way to stop it, unless EVERYONE accepts, others have feelings and opinions. which, isn't likly to happen.

  5. Stereotyping is to big of a thing to try to stop completly...to many people all ready do it.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Stereotypes come up when people look different or act different. Many people like this get stereotyped because other people don't know everything about them so they judge them on their appearence and that's not right. There's truly no way to stop stereotyping because so many people do it. When people come in to talk about bullying and stereotyping many people listen but others don't even take it in. I think people should start keeping their feelings to theirselves before they judge others.

  7. izzy- i agree it is a natural instict

  8. Honestly, steriotyping is considered a way of bullying at some oppinions . Everyone has their own oppinions in life , but some of them can be really mean or rude . People shouldn't judge too quickly because you could have the wrong impression on somebody or something . Example;A new girl sitting alone at lunch, "wow that girl looks weird, nobody talk to her." But once you get to know them, she could turn out to be a really cool person.

  9. In my opinion, stereotyping is not okay, but there is no way to avoid it in the world we live in today. Although i agree that stereotyping is wrong, where would we be without it? I don't want to sound rude by saying this, but i think it would be the safest thing to check all people you are suspicious of, even if it is just because of their skin color. Our safety DOES come first. Just like if we took a trip to Iran or Afganistan, they would still be suspicious of us.

  10. Stereotypes can lead into to bigger problems. People have been hurt by many stereotypes that involve something about them. Stereotyping leads to people becoming predjudice and leaving others out of their groups.

  11. Katya, I really like what you had to say about stereotyping

    ReplyDelete
  12. carly, i completely agree with you and your words of wisdom.

  13. stereotyping isnt something the school can just stop bu having assemblies or "mix it up day". we have to be the ones to actually want to be a better person and stop what we know is wrong.

  17. Katya, I completely agree with you.

    ReplyDelete
  18. thank you tori! i liked yours too, your 100% right. people really should keep their feelings to themselves before judging others.

    ReplyDelete
  19. First, stereotypes usually come up when kids see some one who looks different or acts in a certain way, people judge them. I think people back in the 1800s started using stereotypes by descriminating against black people. Some strategies the teachers use in PCIS might be effective, but some people disagree. Like "Mix It Up Day", most kids don't like it at all and refuse to take part in it. Also sometimes using stereotypes is a natural instinct, some people don't mean to do it, but just do.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Izzy and alex I agree with what you said

    ReplyDelete
  21. Stereotyping is a natural instinct. You do this to protect yourself from danger or predict if something is bad or good is going to happen and you can't stop it.

    ReplyDelete
  22. tina- i agree with the part about they can't stop it with "mix it up day" or assembilies.

    ReplyDelete
  23. tori i agree, way to many people do it to stop it

    ReplyDelete
  24. JEANETTE I AGREE WITH YOU! COMPLETELY!

    ReplyDelete
  25. What you dress like is normal. And when you see someone who acts or dresses different, they're not so normal. And when you see someone that's not considered normal, you stereotype. But everyone's different in some ways, therefore everyone stereotypes.

    ReplyDelete
  26. alex- i agree with you also. most of us do stereotype without even knowing and it usually isnt something you can stop doing

    ReplyDelete
  27. jeanette- i agree that some people dont mean to stereotype but they do anyways

    ReplyDelete
  28. Bridget your right i agree. people usually wont talk to people because theyre new. some people should think about what it would be like for them moving to a new school. what if it was them. but they dont care unless its them moving to the new school. of course they seem quiet and weird theyre probably trying to figure out whats going on in the school. they have no clue. so people should stop judging before they know someone.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think that there is no way to stop stereotyping. The school tries so hard to stop it but no matter how hard they try they can't put it to an end. I feel it's something everyone does and we need to try to just ignore it. Every stereotype isn't true so why do we take them so seriously?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Jesse, how is it possible for me to stereotype stereotyping?

    ReplyDelete
  31. tina and alex i agree about the mixit up day, i dont think that dressing a certain way for a day is going to change anyones opinions about something...because right when that ends people ar back to stereotyping again...until the next mix it up day...

    ReplyDelete
  32. trina- i agree that people should stop judging eachother before they get to no them

    ReplyDelete
  33. stop- stereotyping me by telling me that you cant stereotyping stereotyping

    ReplyDelete
  34. mary, i completely agree with you

    ReplyDelete
  35. carly- i dont agree with you, just because people look different doesnt mean they're guilty of hidding something. nobody has the right to search random people unless they are 100% sure thst person has something to hide. yeah our safety comes first but thats an invasion of privacy to the other people

    ReplyDelete
  36. oh and, everyone in our school gets sterotyped whether we are catorgorized as "popular", "goth", " wierd", "jocks" or something like that. it's not like we want to be, it just happens. if people were to look beyond our outter exteriors and got to known eachother these clicks would probably slowly vanish.

    ReplyDelete
  37. i agree with you mary. maybe instead of ignoring them, you can form a stereotype but give that person a chance to prove it wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  38. But Katya, There's nothing you can say to make people start look at peoples inner exteriors other than outer exteriors.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Everyone in Mercury 8th grade is amazing<3!! haha

    ReplyDelete
  40. Stereotyping does play a role in everyones life. I honestly don't think anyone can stop it if it automatically happens. I do think it is bullying but, it just happens

    ReplyDelete
  41. the mix it up days don't work to stop stereotyping. we are being forced to sit with random people we don't know, and the little talk that does happen is what evers on the notecard in front of you.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Stereo type comes up when people see someone dress differently and doesn't fit into a certain crowd. Some kids who dress in all black get acused for being goth. I dont think theres a way to stop it because everyone has a first opinion on every one so they can just not judge what their opinion is.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I think in todays society stereotyping is our outlook on life. No matter how bad it seems we all do it.And if you say you dont your lying. These generalzations while they have some truth to them cloud our thinking of people and there true personalities. as horrible as it seems its inescapable in this word today.

    ReplyDelete
  44. steriotyping will never stop its very hard to make everyone to stop steriotyping

    ReplyDelete
  45. Stereotyping is obviously a huge problem in schools, but unfortunately it is hard to stop. When a person sees someone with a different type of look or culture people start to think things. This is almost uncontrollable unless this person has information about that other person or has actually had a conversation with that person.

    ReplyDelete
  46. agreed dturner it helps with nothing really.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I dont think stereotyping is bullying, its wrong but its not bullying. - Hannah Cully

    ReplyDelete
  48. Mary I agree. Unfortunalty, there really isn't a way to ever completly stop stereotyping, since it is all mental. It would be extreamily difficult to change what everyone thinks, but I don't know if we can just ignore it.

    ReplyDelete
  49. tom, I both agree and disagree... sure, stereotyping is too big to stop but that doesnt mean we cant at least slow it down

    ReplyDelete
  50. I think that even though no one can stop stereotyping, and that people still do it, people should stop! So if you do it... I personally think that you shouldnt.

    ReplyDelete
  51. steryotyping is the begining to bullying. people steryotype other people and it can be true but it can also not be. people assume things that are not true just because the way they dress, who they hang out with, and where they live. steryotyping will never stop even though people try to stop it.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Sterotyping is something that nobody can really stop, but if its you that is sterotyping in the first place then you are participating in sterotyping. People may talk different, dress different or whatever else they may do ,but there still a human and so are you so there is no reason that you have to judge that person if you dont even know them.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Sterotyping is a big problem as we all know! i dont think that the school can do anything about it because people will still do it and label people the way they see them from the outside! thats not right! you shouldn't label anyone even though everyone does and we know that! i do it too! its not right and everyone should try to be friends with everyone no matter what there personallity is or clothes or other friends!

    ReplyDelete
  54. allie i agree with you and they should stop because it's true.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Stereotyping is definately not a good thing to do, but it's not so much of a big deal. A lot of people forget that there's a difference between stereotyping and being racist/pregodist. People can stereotype all they want as long as they don't degrade people by doing it. People stereotype all the time, it's natural instincts.

    ReplyDelete
  56. stereotyping occurs in everyones thoughts. everytime you see someone you make an instant assumption to who they are based on their appearence. Stereotyping is not good, but its not really bad either. It only gets bad when you act upon the stereotype. it could make you talk to someone differently or treat them differently because of how you have categorized them

    ReplyDelete
  57. haley and tiffani...i completely agree

    ReplyDelete
  58. Tiara- i agree 100% with u! you are so right about everything u said!

    ReplyDelete
  59. stereotyping is a really serious matter that kids and adults dont nessesarily think is a bad thing to do. Because pretty much when you stereotype someone or something, you are judging them based on what you see or think. Therefor you are somewhat bullying them.

    ReplyDelete
  60. sterotyping is bad jason because your making assumptions of people that you dont even know.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I dont think there is anything that we can really do in the school that will make stereotyping stop. Because everything having to do with stereotyping goes on in your head. but i think that people should try not to jump to conclusions about peopl ebut get to no them first.

    ReplyDelete
  62. jenette- i agree wit u completely!

    ReplyDelete
  63. i think its only ok when you act upon it

    ReplyDelete
  64. I agree with all of you who say that stereotyping is like an instinct. When you see someone who looks or acts differently, it's natural to stereotype them. But this also leads to bullying when prejudicial and discriminatory behaviors are exhibited. In a perfect world, everyone would accept each and every person for who they are, embracing their differences. But, unfortunately, the world isn't perfect, and nothing the school does will stop stereotyping. The school's assemblies and other programs may aid in stopping prejudicial and discriminatory behaviors, but people can, will and do always stereotype people, like it or not.

    ReplyDelete
  65. As much as all the comments were great, in my opinion if we all do our part and each try really, really hard we can stop it. Of course it will come in our mind once in a while but we got to learn to control ourselfs, because if we can't even control ourselfs who can? and remenber as hard as it is DON'T QUIT! we can do it.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Jyerrmee i agree with you. We stereotype things to make us feel safe it is a natural thing humans do.

    ReplyDelete
  67. no wait i meant it not ok when u act upon it

    ReplyDelete
  68. Allie, please clarify what you mean by "when you act upon it."

    ReplyDelete
  69. tiarera you could think something about a person and treat them normally until you find out whether your stereotype is true or false and nobody would be affected

    ReplyDelete
  70. paige-i mean like when you start hating that person or something

    ReplyDelete
  71. Marcella i agree with u, if we try we can stop and and we can't quit!

    ReplyDelete
  82. marcella i think that u r rite we will really have to try thou

  83. ahhhhhhhhhh !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  84. I think stereotyping in our school is very harsh and people always think it is a fact.

    ReplyDelete
  85. stereotyping is way to big to stop and every does it

    ReplyDelete
  86. Stereotypes will always come up when your talking...sometimes when you don't mean it

    ReplyDelete
  87. I think sterotyping is definitely a big problem in our school, as well as plenty of others schools. We get our 'labels' from what we do, how we dress, and who we hang out with. It really doesn't matter about all of those things... it only matters who you are inside, and people should realize that.

    ReplyDelete
  88. i think its impossible to stop stereotyping becasue everyone does it

    ReplyDelete
  89. everyone stereotypes. There is no way the school can stop people from judging eachother, so i sugest we just ignore it

    ReplyDelete
  90. Stereotyping is just wrong. I mean, of course everybody has done it! We did it yesterday in class! Probably at least 50% of the time it is accidental. But it is still wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  91. you cant stereo type poeple accidently travis. people just don't realy know what they are doing its not and accident it like our instinct

    ReplyDelete
  92. travis 50% is more than you think. it wouldnt be that much on accident

    ReplyDelete
  93. Stereotypes come up in conversations wether you mean to say it or just by accident. Mostly people say it because of the way people look, their apperance.I think everyone is to blame for stereotyping because it's our fault for saying something just by someones apperance, and I don't think we can stop it because it's people's opinions to say what they want.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Well we did it yesterday in class and we didn't even mean to.

    ReplyDelete
  95. you can still do it by accident nick.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Everyone has stereotyped sometime in their life. At PCIS it happens all the time. Most of the time stereotyping is based on what type of clothes you wear, your friends, etc. You might not even know you are doing it, because it happens so often. There really isn't any way we can stop it, it has stuck with us, and it is common.

    ReplyDelete
  97. stereotyping does happen a lot in our school, and in many others. I dont not think stereotyping can be stoped because almost everyone does it. It is also easy to just lable a person by there apperence.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Most of the time stereotypes come up when you don't mean for them too. It is usually when you are talking about someones looks. You see them and you fill in the blanks yourself. Sometimes it can be for the worst and people can be offended by it

    ReplyDelete
  99. No matter how many assembalies we have, i don't think that there is any way to stop stereotyping. People may look or act differently and usaully the first thing that comes to many peoples minds is usaully something negative. Everybody does it and sometimes you may or may not realize it, but there is no way to prevent it.

    ReplyDelete
  100. yes we did mean to. we even all discused it together and agreed on the ideas it wasnt an accident we just didnt realize it was wrong

    ReplyDelete
  101. spell my naem wrong tk..

    ReplyDelete
  102. We all thought an indian outfit was binladin

    ReplyDelete
  103. travis, exactly we didnt think about it because we were told to describe them, so therefore we stereo typed on our own. I dont think the word you are thinking for is accidently, i think you just mean the we dont know we are stereotyping

    ReplyDelete
  104. Carly- Thats completly wrong, You shouldnt search someone because of their skin color. Your saying that if someone is colored they should be searched? If your uncomfortable thats a different thing but you cant just search someone because of a STEREOTYPE ( espically your skin color.) Your skin color doesnt define who you are. - Hannah & Ariella

    ReplyDelete
  105. Well, it wasn't binladin. We saw the beard and all thought it was binladdin. It could have been any person of that race. We were stereotyping and we didn't even know it. To me that's ACCIDENTAL.

    ReplyDelete
  106. you think its accidental, but it isnt, we perposly thought he was a terrorist. and we all thought it was a teroriist as soon as we saw the beadr and face it was our instinct, thats not an accident we thought of it purposely because that is what we do. you cant accidently think of something, you chose what you think of so therfrore you chose to stereotype

    ReplyDelete
  107. Hmmm. your very convincing in this arguement. BUT, it's not necessarily instinct. it doesnt have to be somebody of that race. All i'm saying is that sometimes we say things that are stereotypical by accident! it might come up in a conversation and you dont even know it.

    ReplyDelete
  108. you cant say or think something accidently! you control what you say and think of therefore you abviosly ment to say something stereotypical

    ReplyDelete
  109. Ever heard of the expression "Think before you talk."? Maybe some people just say things that just blurt out by a.c.c.i.d.e.n.t.

    ReplyDelete
  110. i have heard that expression, and what it means is the person said something stupid or wrong that they should have not said. words just dont pop out of your mouth yo have to say them

    ReplyDelete
  111. This is true. But like mr. sorensen said in class, "These guys could just switch hats and they would look the same." only because they had the same beard. That sants Clause could have been Binladin for all we know. We didnt know, therefore we accidentally stereotyped the two masks

    ReplyDelete
  112. that makes no sense! and we only looked at one picture each so we did stereo type on purpose we just didnt realize what we were doing was actualy stereotyping we just thought of it as doing what we were told!

    ReplyDelete
  113. sorry thravis nicks right for once hahahahaha :)

  115. Normal is whatever you want to be. If you think it's normal to where black clothes, piercings, and makeup, that's normal. Stereotyping and normal tie together perfectly. People stereotype because the other person does not look like their definition of normal.

    ReplyDelete
  116. my definition of normal is an average person who just does what everyone else does

  121. Carly I agree completely with what you said about stereotyping. The terrosts attacking America aren't the caucasian people who speak English it's the guy wearing the turban

    ReplyDelete
  122. normal...is waatever you feel you want to be, what makes you feel normal some people want to be a circus clown, and thats normal to them. same with lawers, thats normal, whatever you feel that makes you happy, is normal

    ReplyDelete
  123. nick definitley wins...sorry travis

    ReplyDelete
  124. In my opinion I don't really know what the definition of normal is.Everybody has a different meanig of normal but it depends really on what your doing, because like Mr. Sorensen was saying Is killing normal? and of course everybody said no but what about a soldier in war that's normal to kill. So, in the end I think normal is when a person lives their life and when they do something they don't feel quilt or don't regrete doing it or for most people normal is average (being just like everybody else)

    ReplyDelete
  125. allie- ur definition doesnt rly make sense.....

    ReplyDelete
  126. marcella- i completely agree wit u!

    ReplyDelete
  127. Ashaley i love your comment about normal and i agree with u

    ReplyDelete
  128. haley-what i meant was that i think a normal person is is just a person that goes with what everyone else does...but if they do their own thing, than i wouldn't call them normal, i would call them different...which is a good thing
